  • Council for Accelerated Programs (CAP) Quality Standards - April 26, 2016

    The Council for Accelerated Programs (CAP) is a membership organization serving professionals who lead, teach, and conduct research in accelerated programs in higher education. CAP enhances collaboration and shares best practices and research findings among its members to design and deliver the most effective accelerated learning for adult and nontraditional students. As a key component of its work, CAP has developed a set of quality standards for accelerated programs, divided into nine areas encompassing administration and leadership to student services. CAP’s Quality Standards are designed to guide accelerated programs in demonstrating their quality and rigor for both internal and external accountability purposes. The webinar provides an overview of the standards and shares examples of how institutions have utilized these standards to enhance their accelerated program offerings for adult learners.

  • Bringing Them Back: State Outreach Initiatives for Adult Learners - March 30, 2016

    As stakeholders across higher education—from institutional leaders to policymakers—become increasingly aware of the importance of adult learners in meeting their attainment goals, some states have launched coordinated outreach efforts to attract adults who have left postsecondary education to return and complete a credential. The webinar featured an overview of Indiana’s You Can. Go Back. campaign and Tennessee’s Drive to 55 initiative, as it relates to adult learners. Representatives from Indiana’s Commission for Higher Education and Tennessee’s Higher Education Commission discussed how they developed effective messaging, built relationships with participating institutions, and how they are tracking the success of their respective efforts.

    The second in a two-part series on implementing credit for prior learning (CPL) at the institutional level, this webinar—presented in partnership with the American Council on Education (ACE) and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO)—focuses on how credit for prior learning (CPL) can be translated onto transcripts, as well as specific processes, challenges, and solutions related to transcripting and transferring CPL.

  • Collective Impact Initiatives & Adult College Completion - March 19, 2015

    Collective impact is defined by the Stanford Social Innovation Review as “the commitment of a group of important actors from different sectors to a common agenda for solving a specific social problem.” Over the past few years, collective impact initiatives with a focus on improving educational attainment have sprung up in communities across the country, drawing significant attention from the media, researchers, and funders. This webinar will explore how collective impact work can relate to adult learners specifically and its potential for driving forward a completion agenda. The presentation will feature an overview of existing research on the topic and representatives from two city-level projects – San Antonio’s SA2020 and Louisville’s 55,000 Degrees – discussing how their communities have incorporated adult college completion into their city-wide collective impact strategies.

  • Partnerships for Progress: Workforce and Higher Education Institutions — May 21, 2014

    Improving collaboration between workforce boards and institutions of higher education could help better serve those adults who enter the workforce system with a significant number of college credits but no degree. This webinar will explore specific strategies that both two- and four-year institutions, as well as policymakers, can pursue to foster better communication and collaboration ultimately resulting in increased credential completion by adults who enter the workforce training system.

  • The University of Wisconsin's Flex Option (Part Two): The Nuts and Bolts of Developing and Delivering the Flex Curricula — May 1, 2014

Development of the Flexible Option’s curricular offerings has required close collaboration between faculty and program administrators. Beyond the technical aspects of the program's development (which will not be addressed in this webinar), it has required a conceptual reorientation among all those involved.

The process of delivering the curriculum to students requires managing faculty workloads while still providing close mentorship and advising through the Academic Success Coaches.

Speakers from across the University of Wisconsin system provided details on the development of the academic aspects of the program, the process used to work through these issues, and the early lessons they have identified as the program has rolled out.

This program aimed at adult students awards degrees based on mastery of certain competencies rather than credit hours. While competency-based education programs are not new, they are emerging as a promising strategy to increase adult degree completion. The University of Wisconsin is in the midst of implementing this new, large-scale effort. Key leaders from the initiative will share insights into their work so far.

Cliff Adelman, who led IHEP's recently-completed Project Win-Win, discussed some of the findings from this work, which collaborated with 61 institutions to identify and find those students who had completed enough credits for an associate's degree but never received one.

  • LearningCounts.org — December 8, 2011

    The Council for Adult And Experiential Learning (CAEL) recently launched LearningCounts.org, an online Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) service through which potential students can develop a portfolio and receive credit recommendations that are accepted at numerous partner institutions. This webinar highlighted the benefits of LearningCounts.org and lessons learned during the initial launch of the service.

  • Adult Degree Completion Evaluation Technical Assistance – June 21, 2011

    As part of its commitment to increasing college completion by adults with prior credits, Lumina Foundation is conducting a broad external evaluation of its efforts. Lumina staff will discuss the reasoning behind the approach and how it may impact overall efforts to boost adult college completion. The webinar also highlights some of the evaluation technical assistance available to Lumina grantees.
