The WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) will hold its annual meeting November 19-21 in Portland, Oregon. More information about the meeting can be found here.

Registration is still open. The program includes several sessions on competency-based education including an in-depth session which will include subject matter experts, roundtable discussions, and panel presentations.

When Indiana mandated degree plans for students at all state institutions, the state joined Texas as the only two places where such maps required across the state. The idea – that entering students are given a customized map that outlines a path toward their degree – certainly holds promise for adult learners as well as traditional students.

The Adult College Completion Network was partially founded on the premise that improving certificate and degree completion by adults with prior college credit would require collaboration among diverse stakeholders. The workforce system, state higher education agencies, institutions, businesses and employers, local governments, community-based organizations, and others all are working in some capacity to eliminate barriers and improve outcomes for returning adults.

Lumina Foundation's Strategy Labs has published an online resource for state leaders that recommends adopting a statewide policy on awarding credit through prior learning. In addition to citing recent research from the Council on Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), the site also includes several examples from states that have adopted adult-friendly policies to evaluate prior learning and award credit.

A new report released by the National Student Clearinghouse sheds some light on the population of adults with some college credit but no degree. The data show 12 percent of this group has made significant progress towards a degree – completing at least two years of postsecondary education.

The Starbucks-Arizona State University (ASU) partnership that will provide tuition reimbursement for employees in their last two years of postsecondary education garnered a good deal of press recently. The program has many interesting components that will benefit a broad range of students who are employed by Starbucks, but this post focuses on the implications of this new program for adults with prior college credit but no degree.

Two publications recently provided a fresh look at how military and veteran students are faring in postsecondary education. Many active duty servicemembers and veterans are utilizing federal education assistance programs, such as the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, to help further their education and position themselves as competitive in today’s job market. Both the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9/11 GI Bill provide current and former military servicemembers, and their dependents, with financial assistance for tuition, books, and living expenses associated with postsecondary education.

The Education Commission of the States (ECS) has just released a brief on recent legislation passed by states that affects veteran and military students. The brief focuses on prior learning assessment, student support services, and policies to help students who are deployed in the middle of an academic term.
